Black Sapote

Sapote Sprouts

Is it delicious?
Black Sapote popped up as an option from my local veggie/fruit producer. I couldn’t resist trying something new, especially something referred to as “chocolate pudding” fruit. I confess, it did not taste like the pudding I had in mind. But after digging around in this strange new fruit I found the most beautiful seeds! I wish I had taken a picture of them before planting them. But, as luck would have it, the sprouts popped up with the seed still intact! (see photo above)

Black sapote comes in a squishy green coat…the fruit inside is black. There are many varieties of sapote trees and fruits. Black sapote is a tropical fruit tree that only grows in zones 10-12. I am in south Florida at the moment, so I hope to get my sprouts growing into trees this year!

Save Seeds | Grow Stuff

Any vegetable or fruit you eat has seeds in it.
Have a look around in whatever it is you are chopping up for lunch – maybe you’ll get lucky and find some seeds to through in a pot full of dirt. Growing things from seeds is pretty easy, fun, and the practice can fill your yard with fun plants.

Potatoes grow from Potato “eyes”
I had some extra potatoes floating around a month ago so I cut them up and stuck them in the ground…now I have potato plants growing in the front yard!

Back to the sapote…

I hope to see fruit like this growing a beautiful sapote tree in a couple of years:

I’ll keep you posted…for now it’s just time to water and wait.
